DOLTON, Ill. – The childhood‍ home of⁣ Pope Leo XIV,a modest ‍house located in Dolton,a suburb of Chicago,is set to be auctioned off online until June. The property was initially listed with a price of $199,000.

According to The New York Times, the real estate company managing ⁤the sale, Paramount Realty, previously⁤ handled the auction of former President Donald Trump’s childhood‌ home⁣ in Queens, New York, which sold for millions in 2017.

The current owner decided‌ to pursue an auction after ‍realizing the historical significance of the property, the Times reported. On May 8, the day Cardinal⁢ Robert Prevost was chosen as the new⁤ Pope, the owner, Paweł Radzik, learned that ⁢the pontiff had spent‌ a portion of his ‌childhood in the house.

Steve Budzik, the real estate agent,⁣ told the Times ‍that offers ‍began pouring in after ‍the home’s history became known. He and Radzik then decided to remove the listing and ‌explore ⁣alternative sales strategies.

“It seemed‌ impossible to set a price for the house now that ⁣they knew their unique story,” Budzik told the Times. This led them to Paramount Realty, known⁢ for its success with the Trump childhood home auction.

Bidding for the property⁢ is underway and will conclude on June 18. “It is no longer a conventional sale. A property is no longer sold, much more ⁤than that is sold,” Budzik said.

Budzik believes the auction format offers the best⁣ opportunity to ⁤maximize exposure ⁣and sale price. “This is the best opportunity to ⁢sell ⁣it for the highest ‍price and also to obtain the ‍greatest amount of exposure,” he said. He anticipates interest ⁣from a wide range of potential buyers, including those who⁢ might seek ⁣to transform the house into a museum or ⁣landmark, according to the Times.

“Within a week it ‍will be the most famous house on the planet.⁢ Which will be the best⁢ and highest bid,⁢ or who ‍will be, is an unknown,” Budzik added.
