Le Pen Vows to Fight On After EU Funds Misuse Conviction
PARIS (AP) — French national conservative leader Marine Le Pen has vowed to continue her political fight after being convicted of misusing European Union funds.Addressing supporters at a rally Sunday, Le Pen declared she would not give up despite the legal setback.
Members and supporters of Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) gathered in Paris to denounce what they called a “witch hunt” against their party. The demonstration was met by counter-protests from left-wing and centrist groups.
political Fallout and Reactions
Former Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, speaking at a meeting of President Emmanuel macron’s Renaissance party, accused the far-right of attacking judges and institutions. “If you steal, you will pay,” Attal stated.
Attal also criticized what he described as unprecedented foreign interference in French affairs, alluding to support for Le Pen from figures such as former U.S. President Donald Trump and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
the Conviction and Sentence
A French court on Monday convicted Le Pen of creating fictitious jobs in the European Parliament and using EU funds to pay assistants who were, in reality, working for her party in France.
the court also imposed a five-year ban on Le Pen holding public office, potentially preventing her from running in the 2027 presidential election.
In addition to the ban, Le Pen received a four-year prison sentence, with half of the term suspended. The remaining two years will be served with an electronic monitoring bracelet.
Le Pen’s Political Future
Le pen,56,has twice lost to Emmanuel Macron in French presidential elections,in 2017 and 2022. Though, her party’s support has grown in recent years, leading to speculation about her potential for future electoral success.
During the nine-week trial last year, Le Pen maintained her innocence, arguing that the legal proceedings were politically motivated to prevent her from being elected.
