Leprosy in the Dominican Republic: A Disease Cured, A Stigma Challenged
for decades, leprosy – also known as Hansen’s disease - carried a heavy burden of fear and misunderstanding. But a recent, comprehensive campaign in the Dominican Republic is working to dismantle both the disease’s presence and the damaging stigma surrounding it. Throughout September, the Board of trustees and the Dominican Dermatological Institute (IDCP) spearheaded a nationwide initiative centered on the powerful message: “Leprosy is cured. The stigma too.”
The campaign wasn’t confined to major cities. Educational activities, medical outreach, and vital data reached communities across the country, including Santo Domingo, Santiago, Puerto Plata, Mao, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, Higüey, San Cristóbal, and Barahona. Efforts extended beyond clinical settings, with presentations in schools and vulnerable communities, coupled with a significant media push designed to reach thousands with information about early detection and treatment.
“This month provided a crucial opportunity not only to educate the public but also to highlight the IDCP’s vital role in training the next generation of dermatologists and combating skin diseases across the Dominican Republic,” explained Dr. Emma guzmán de Cruz, President of the Board of Trustees.
The IDCP isn’t just treating existing cases; it’s building a future free from leprosy. As the sole provider of dermatology residencies in the country, the institute is cultivating a network of skilled professionals dedicated to tackling skin health challenges nationwide. This commitment to education is as critical as it’s direct medical care.
Dr. Víctor Pou Soarez, director of the Express Institute, emphasized the collaborative nature of the campaign’s success. “We extend our sincere gratitude to the media – the editors and journalists – who amplified our message. Their invaluable support was instrumental in reaching so many people in a short period.”
The campaign employed a multi-faceted approach, including awareness events, community conferences, expert lectures, and a widespread media campaign reinforcing the core message. Leprosy *is* curable, and the associated shame and discrimination are unacceptable.
