A Three-decade Run at KABC
Leslie Sykes, a familiar face to Los Angeles television viewers, announced her retirement from KABC-TV (ABC 7) on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, after more than 30 years with the station. Sykes joined KABC in 1994 as a reporter and steadily rose through the ranks, eventually becoming an anchor for the 4 a.m., 5 a.m., and 6 a.m. broadcasts.
From Compton to the anchor Desk
Sykes’ broadcasting career began after graduating from Spelman College in Atlanta. She initially worked as a desk assistant at KTTV (Fox 11) in Los Angeles before securing her first on-air position at WDAM in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Further experience was gained at WVUE in New Orleans, Louisiana, before returning to Los Angeles and ultimately finding a home at KABC.
During her on-air announcement, Sykes reflected on her time at the station, expressing gratitude to the viewers.”Working here at Eyewitness News has been the privilege of my life. This station has been my home, and you, our viewers, have been my extended family,” she stated. Sykes highlighted the shared experiences of covering major events in Southern California, from natural disasters like wildfires and earthquakes to significant civic events like elections and parades.
Remaining with KABC for Now
KABC has announced that Sykes will remain with the station for approximately one month to assist with the transition. Details regarding her replacement have not yet been released. Her departure marks the end of an era for many Los Angeles viewers who have begun their days with her for decades.
