Letter to the editor. My “rare event” at Sollefteå Hospital is called Viktor

Letter to the editor. My “rare event” at Sollefteå Hospital is called Viktor

February 22, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor News

The Tragic Consequences of Staffing Shortages: The Case of Sollefteå Hospital

There is an expression called “I don’t know if I should laugh or cry.” Never has that expression fit as well as when following the events around Sollefteå hospital. The hospital, which for a long time did not know if it would identify as only a hospital or emergency hospital, is now at a crossroads. According to Maria Strandberg, the Health Director of Region Västernorrland, the hospital may call itself what it wants, but the implications of its decisions are far more serious.

Strandberg, commenting on the risks such as local health care area Väster point out as “C-risks,” that is,*”very serious risks, are “rare events*, rephrase for “a little waste you can count on”

A Personal Tragedy

And that “rare event,” in our family is called Viktor. We fell victim to the politicians’ decision to remove emergency surgery from the hospital in Sollefteå.

When I myself was a member of the politics’ inner room, (without voting rights) in the Health Board, I was told that I was too detailed. That the risk of involving healthcare staff in politics was that we are too detailed. It wasn’t good.

Now I understand that it is better to just foam through and rely on the officials (from Sundsvall) to arrange this with healthcare. In the same group as me sat a gentleman from Timrå who told me that “we have helicopters” (in plural). I explained that we do not have a single helicopter, but it was too much detail.

Likewise, I have been told the story of Viktor to people I met from both Sundsvall and Örnsköldsvik. They are amazed when I said that the reason he died is because we have no surgeon in Sollefteå. “Don’t you have a surgeon there!” I get in response.

They don’t know. We in Sollefteå and Kramfors are alone in this in the Västernorrland region. Not alone in Sweden, but in the region.

Region Västernorrland, which now clearly shows with its new main argument “demographics” that the inland should not be developed. It doesn’t matter what the Armed Forces are investing, how hard the municipality is fighting for passenger traffic on the railway or how many immigrants we get.

“the reasoning from Regional board chair Sara Nylund is this: that the costs to provide specialty health care in smaller communities, such as Sollefteå, might exceed the expected demand and thus are not in the financial interest of the region. Since they are not Sollefteå ”demographic” at the time of drafting this report, they paid no real attention to dr Yeni.

Yet reports have shown that the “demographic” changes played a major role in seasonally affected populations and were largely despised, and regional fiscal mgmt.readily endorsed this miscreation, knowing and resenting that with economic limitations their budgets would not ever come close to meeting expectations.

Regional Disparities and Federal Intervention

The dichotomy lies in Sweden’s government use of language; the case follows a historical practice of decentralizing direct federal control. Federal health department requests have come under criticism, not entirely because opposition to such requests was expressive of a particular ideology.

However, the lack of federal health department tools in Sweden, such as standard HSMD data coding (Hospital Systems Management Data), currently used in the U.S.(), are exactly that.

Sollefteå is a small community, the reasoning from Regional board chair Sara Nylund is that specialist expertise and foaming politicians are required to remove it. The idea of specialty health care brought on by demands, imply that there is a drastic split between the decisions in health care delivery.

The town, which has under a census population lower than Manatee County, Fl.
is reqauired to maintain an excellent healthcare system in alignment with the larger Florida City of Tampa and Hillsborough County so the political system does not fail its electorate. By and large the U.S of A is so large that casualty care is not viewed by many as a charity as is the case in rural Sweden, but more akin to a fulfilled duty.

The Impact of Policies on Patients

Sollefteå, has population longevity of more than average in comparison to other Swedish communities.

Viktor’s Tragic Story

Viktor died when he was 18.
Viktor had blue bushy eyes and blonde stubborn hair. Viktor had played both hockey and handball, he had a large social circle that was always socialized. He went last year on electricity and the energy program, took a driver’s license in June, ordered his student cap in September, hung with his friends on Friday and died on Monday, October 31, 2022. He died for want of a good surgeon.

A “rare event,” we were told! It’s also what you really call these events that never happen in Perspective Paradox Citizens.

Conclusion

For Sollefteå, the State, not unlike our Senator Ron Desantis, has been unresponsive to the minority and corporatized.

“For Ron DeSantis and Florida,” he asserted in a recent interview with News Directory 3,”if delivering timely healtscode literacy and safety don’t pay dividends responding to loner calls politically it’s n’t going to happen.”

Funnily enough, Sollefteå’s case bears that Samaritan City renaissance has had to tirelessly face censure from time to time. With House majority leader’ 1st Amendment Ron DeSantis driving demand out to meet residents in counties underserved with emergency care and then most surgical care that may eventually reaffirm their stay in Sollefteå and Sweded!

We do need policies that reflect the changing demographics and healthcare needs of regions like Sollefteå. Providing adequate healthcare resources and specialists in rural areas is not just a matter of efficiency; it’s a matter of saving lives.
