Apple Releases Major iOS 18 Update with Exciting New Features

Apple has officially rolled out the highly anticipated iOS 18 update, bringing a plethora of exciting features to enhance the iPhone experience. The update focuses on personalization and flexibility, with a range of improvements to make your iPhone more tailored to your needs.

iOS 18 Compatibility

All iPhone models that support iOS 17 can upgrade to iOS 18, including older devices like the iPhone XR and iPhone 11.

Home Screen Customization

iOS 18 offers a higher degree of home screen customization, allowing users to place application icons and widgets as desired, including the option to leave blank space. Additionally, users can adjust the color of application icons and widgets, and a new dark mode option is available to convert most application icons to a dark theme. Users can also choose to enlarge the icon and hide the app name.

Upgrade of Messaging Application

iOS 18 brings many new features to the Messages app, including text effects such as explosions, ripples, vibrations, and more. Users can also format specific words in messages with bold, underline, and italics. The Tapbacks system has been transformed, allowing users to react to messages with a variety of emojis or stickers.

iOS 18 also upgrades the iPhone’s satellite connection function, enabling users to send text messages and iMessages via satellite. Dynamic Island has a new instant activity that lets users know they’re connected to the satellite. The messaging application also introduces a scheduled messaging function, allowing users to send messages at specified times, and supports RCS messages, improving cross-platform communication between iPhone and Android.

Control Center Improvements

The Control Center has undergone a major revision, allowing users to create multiple pages to facilitate the management of different control items. A new API has been added to allow third-party applications to integrate controls into the Control Center. iOS 18’s Control Center overhaul extends to the Lock screen, letting users personalize the two controls that appear there.

iPhone Mirroring

iOS 18, together with macOS Sequoia, introduces a powerful new feature – iPhone Mirroring, which allows users to control their iPhone directly from their Mac, and even receive notifications from their iPhone on their Mac. Users can click on the notification to start iPhone Mirroring.

SharePlay Enhancements

iOS 18 introduces an improved screen sharing experience through SharePlay, providing new ways to interact and collaborate. Users can now draw on other people’s screens and let them see their annotations and descriptions instantly. Additionally, users can control their screen and perform actions directly, providing a more practical method of remote assistance.

Photos App Redesign

The Photos application has undergone a major revamp, reducing the labels at the bottom and introducing new classification methods, such as “Recent Days”, “People and Pets”, “Travel”, etc. Users can also customize the layout of the Photos app and hide parts of the content they don’t need.

Password App

iOS 18 introduces a new Password Management app where users can manage all their passwords, passkeys, Wi-Fi passwords, and more. The app also supports cross-platform support for Windows, iPadOS, and macOS.

Privacy and Security Enhancements

In the new version, users can hide and lock applications and need to use Face ID, Touch ID, or password to unlock. Additionally, iOS 18 allows users to share only the information of specific contacts instead of the entire contact list.

Apple Wallet Improvements

Apple Wallet introduces a new Tap to Cash feature that allows users to quickly transfer money by holding their iPhone close to other people. Additionally, event tickets have been redesigned in Apple Wallet to provide more details about venues and events.

Game Improvements

iOS 18 is optimized for mobile gaming, introducing Game Mode to help maximize gaming performance, reduce background activity, and improve controller and AirPods responsiveness.

iOS 18 also includes many subtle features, such as improvements to the calendar app, new features in Safari (such as “Highlights” and “Distraction Control”), and the ability to record in the Phone app, etc.

For some users, it may be worth waiting before updating to iOS 18 to ensure that the features are stable. The Apple Intelligence function will not be available until iOS 18.1, which is expected to be released in October.
