Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has found an unusual way to cope with the pressures of professional football: building Lego sets. The 22-year-old admits to being a “big kid” and enjoys the intricate process of constructing models, including a detailed replica of the house from the movie “Home Alone.”
“I saw a girl on TikTok building Lego so I thought I wanted to get into it,” Colwill said. “I’m a big kid. I think I’ve built five or six different things. They take time, but I enjoy it.”
Colwill’s interest in Lego began during a challenging period last season, after returning from a successful loan spell at Brighton. Expectations were high, but he struggled to find his form and suffered from injuries. playing out of position at left-back added to his difficulties, and he missed out on a place in England’s Euro 2024 squad.
The Lego sets provided a welcome distraction. “It just takes your mind away from everything,” Colwill explained. “Last season when I was struggling a bit I started doing it. I built the Home Alone one with the movie on in the background and time just flies. It was around Christmas time, so I got myself in the spirit.”
He added, ”It just takes you back to when you’re a kid in terms of there’s no worries, there’s no problems. You feel relaxed and in your comfort zone. You’re not thinking about much more than that. When you put your mind to something you blank out everything else around you. That’s why I enjoy it so much.”
Colwill’s form has improved this season, thanks to a combination of hard work, a move back to Southampton to be closer to family, and the arrival of new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca. he has quickly gained Maresca’s trust and feels he is progressing under the Italian coach.
Scoring the winning goal against Nottingham Forest, securing Chelsea’s place in next season’s Champions League, was a significant moment for Colwill. He has elevated his game during the final stretch of the season.
Chelsea are also competing in the Conference League final against Real Betis. Colwill, who recently earned a call-up to the England squad, has made substitute appearances in the competition and could play a key role in the final.
“I’ve had some ups and downs,” he says. “There were some really good moments and some terrible moments I’ve had to learn from. It’s all part of the plan. You have to take it in your stride.”
Colwill dismisses the notion that the Conference League is a minor trophy. “People outside our bubble underrate the competition,” he says. “We all know how big the competition is.If we win it will give us confidence to hopefully win more.”
What’s next
Looking ahead, Colwill hopes to celebrate a Conference League victory by building a Lego McLaren racing car or even visiting Legoland.
