Lexi Thompson in contention at Meijer LPGA Classic
Updated June 14,2025
BELMONT,Mich. — Lexi Thompson is once again a contender at the Meijer LPGA Classic, held at Blythefield Country Club. One year after a tough playoff loss, Thompson’s strong performance puts her within striking distance of the led.
Thompson, making a limited number of tour appearances this season, carded a 3-under 69 on Friday. Her late surge, including three birdies in the final four holes amidst breezy conditions, brought her to 7-under overall. The 2015 champion is just one stroke behind the leading quartet: Karis Davidson, Carlota Ciganda, Hye-Jin Choi, and Celine Boutier.
Davidson, playing in the afternoon, also finished strong with birdies on the 16th and 18th holes for a round of 70. Ciganda and Choi each posted 67s, while Boutier shot a 68, all during the morning session.
Thompson shares seventh place with Nanna Koerstz Madsen, Amanda Doherty, Bronte Law, Minjee Lee, and Sofia Garcia.
Grace Kim,who also participated in last year’s playoff won by Lilia Vu,is at 6-under after a 73. A late stumble with bogeys on two of her last three holes cost her a share of the lead. Mi Hyang Lee, who led after the first round with a 64, struggled to a 75, dropping her to 5-under.
With the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship approaching in Texas, only a few of the world’s top players are competing at Blythefield. Haeran Ryu, ranked No. 5 and the highest-ranked player in the field, made the cut at 1-under after a 74.
Vu, the defending champion, missed the cut after rounds of 77 and 75.
”The golf course is one thing. It’s always in great shape for us, which we always look forward to,” Thompson saeid. ”But the amount of support that the tournament gets and also how Meijer gives back to the community as well. it’s not just a tournament. It’s much bigger than that.”
“Some days are harder than others and we get frustrated, but at the end of the day it is just golf,” Thompson said.
“We just really hung in there today,” Davidson said. “Was a bit of a grind, and nice to get the couple birdies at the end.”
“Coming here the week before a major obviously gives you confidence for playing next week,” Ciganda said. ”The course is one that I like. I enjoy coming here, and it’s always fun playing in Grand Rapids.”
What’s next
The final rounds promise intense competition as Thompson and others vie for the Meijer LPGA Classic title, with the upcoming major adding extra significance to their performance.
