Lexington is bracing for a major economic and tourism surge as the fall horse racing meet and the upcoming Breeders’ Cup descend upon central Kentucky. With the racing season beginning next Friday, local officials are ramping up outreach efforts to ensure visitors experience attractions far beyond the Keeneland Racetrack.

Lexington Prepares for Tourism Influx

Planning for the influx of visitors has been underway, according to Leslie Miller, Vice President of Marketing for Visit Lex. Miller stated that preparations have been ongoing essentially since Lexington last hosted the Breeders’ Cup in 2022.

“We have quite an opportunity here as a city to put our best foot forward,” Miller said, noting the dual impact of the fall meet and the championship event.

Looking Beyond the Racetrack

Local tourism organizers are emphasizing that the true measure of success extends well beyond the racing venue itself. Officials want visitors to explore the region’s horse farms, the Bourbon Trail, local restaurants, and public parks.

“My hope is that people may come for the races, but they leave remembering so much more about Lexington, and it encourages them to want to come back, and that is an impact that we feel well beyond the Breeders’ Cup,” Miller explained.

Mobilizing the Hospitality Workforce

To support that goal, Visit Lex has launched hotel outreach initiatives across the city. Staff members are providing local hotels and their employees with detailed information on regional attractions so hospitality workers can guide incoming guests to area destinations.

“We will be doing that to make sure our hotel partners and their staff have information on the local things to do and recommendations to make to folks that may be coming into town to make sure that we are pointing them in the right direction,” Miller said.

Financial Projections

Financial returns from the event are projected to top previous totals. When Lexington hosted the Breeders’ Cup four years ago, the weekend generated an $81 million economic impact across Lexington and the surrounding areas, according to figures provided by Miller. City officials expect the upcoming late-October event to exceed that previous total.

Building Long-Term Engagement

Beyond the immediate economic windfall of the weekend, tourism leadership is focused on long-term engagement. Flawless execution during October is designed to turn first-time race fans into returning tourists.

“You may be here for the event, and so your weekend is jam-packed, so we want to do everything we can to make people think, my goodness, I must come back because I have to experience all these,” Miller said.
