Liam Lawson qualified eighth for Formula One’s Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, securing a chance to earn his first World Championship points of the season for Red Bull. The New Zealand driver stepped into the senior Red Bull seat at short notice after Isack Hadjar suffered a wrist injury that ruled him out for the weekend. Lawson returned to the top team for the first time since a brief two-race stint at the start of the 2025 championship that ended with his demotion to Racing Bulls, where he has raced since. Sitting ninth in the drivers’ championship, the 24-year-old reached Q3 for the first time as a Red Bull driver and finished just over a tenth behind teammate Max Verstappen, who qualified seventh.

Adapting to Red Bull Machinery at Zandvoort

Lawson admitted the transition back to Red Bull presented immediate challenges because the car handles significantly differently than the Racing Bulls machinery he has driven throughout 2025. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, Lawson highlighted the steering feel and cockpit ergonomics as major adjustments.

Other than the power unit, it’s just the way the car turns into corners. The steering is the most different. We have very different steering feels just in terms of how much we use, how much we lock the car. And for me, that’s been the biggest thing to get my head around this weekend.

The different seating position also made driving the car physically more demanding than his experience at Racing Bulls, according to Lawson. He noted that he struggled more with the physical demands simply from being in a different seat and ergonomic setup.

Qualifying Pressure and Verstappen’s Struggles

During the final Q3 session, approaching rain forced Red Bull to alter their strategy by abandoning the build laps Lawson had used earlier in qualifying and sending him straight into a push lap. Lawson noted he struggled with traction on the exit of Turn 1 because he had not previously run an out-and-push lap sequence during the session. He believed an even better starting position was possible before losing the front of his car at Turn 10. Meanwhile, four-times world champion Max Verstappen qualified seventh after continuing to struggle with the balance of his Red Bull, according to the sources. Verstappen stated that overnight setup changes made ahead of the session failed to improve the car’s balance from earlier practice and sprint sessions.

Yeah, we changed quite a bit, and it actually didn’t make a difference. So the balance was pretty much the same as what I had all weekend. So it didn’t really allow me to push, or feel comfortable with the car. So that’s then the position that you’re in.

At the front of the grid, McLaren driver Lando Norris secured pole position at the seaside Zandvoort circuit ahead of Mercedes pair George Russell and Kimi Antonelli. The result marks the third pole for McLaren at Zandvoort and back-to-back poles for Norris following Hungary before the August break. Historical statistics show that the driver starting on pole position has always won the Dutch round since it returned to the calendar in 2021 after a 34-year absence. Further down the grid, Racing Bulls driver Arvid Lindblad qualified 10th, while temporary teammate Yuki Tsunoda—serving as a reserve taking the seat vacated by Lawson—qualified 12th. Lawson’s eighth-place qualifying performance followed an 11th-place finish in the 24-lap sprint race earlier in the day, where he spent much of the running battling regular Racing Bulls teammate Lindblad on a circuit where overtaking is difficult.
