Liam Lawson continues to perform as the standout midfield driver for Racing Bulls, contributing the majority of his team’s points as they compete for fifth place in the constructors championship ahead of the United States Grand Prix. The upgrade, which Lawson missed out on during the Belgian Grand Prix in July, aims to provide the team with a competitive edge as they fight for fifth place in the constructors’ championship.
The Upgrade Path for Lawson
The path to this upgrade was determined by an internal competition earlier this season. In July, Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane faced a logistical challenge when the team could only produce one upgraded cooling system for the Spa-Francorchamps circuit. To ensure fairness, Permane brokered an agreement between Lawson and teammate Arvid Lindblad, stating that the driver who qualified higher at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone would receive the new parts first.

It’s not so easy, we don’t like bringing updates for just one car. It was impossible for us to do it to two cars. I suggested the simple option, to make it fair, to upgrade no cars for Spa and then both for Budapest. Lawson and Lindblad looked at me like I was crazy. The next thing I said was we could flip a coin, or make it a bit of fun and say whoever qualifies in front in Silverstone gets the upgrade. They both signed up for it, and that’s what we did.

Lawson secured the upgrade package one race later at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Since receiving those components, he has established himself as a consistent performer in the midfield, currently sitting ninth in the drivers’ championship.
Stakes in the Constructors’ Championship
The performance of the Racing Bulls car is critical as the team competes against Alpine for fifth in the constructors’ championship. This position carries a significant financial incentive, with an estimated prize money windfall of $180 million on the line. Lawson has played a central role in this effort, contributing the majority of the team’s 100 points. His individual total of 75 points—accrued across his time with Racing Bulls and a three-race stint with Red Bull—currently leaves him seven points clear of the entire Alpine team.
