Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior has admitted he does not know what consequences the club would face if they fail to qualify for the Champions League next season, highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the club’s European ambitions as the 2025-26 Premier League campaign nears its conclusion.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s final matchday fixture against Newcastle United on May 25, 2026, Rosenior acknowledged that while securing a top-four finish remains the primary objective, the potential repercussions of missing out on Champions League football are not yet clear to him or his coaching staff.

“I don’t know what the consequences would be if we don’t qualify for the Champions League,” Rosenior said in a pre-match press conference at Stamford Bridge on April 18, 2026. “That’s not something I’ve been briefed on in detail, and frankly, my focus is entirely on getting the team ready to win our last game and give ourselves the best chance.”

The comments come as Chelsea sit in fifth place in the Premier League table with 68 points from 37 matches, two points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa and three ahead of sixth-placed Manchester United. A win against Newcastle would guarantee Chelsea at least a fifth-place finish, but Champions League qualification depends on results elsewhere, particularly if Villa drop points in their final game against Liverpool.

Under the current UEFA coefficient system, England is allocated four Champions League spots based on Premier League finish. The top four teams qualify directly for the group stage, while the fifth-placed team enters the Europa League group stage unless they win the FA Cup or Carabao Cup, which would grant them a Europa League place instead.

Chelsea have already been eliminated from both domestic cups this season, exiting the FA Cup in the fifth round to Manchester City and the Carabao Cup in the semifinals to Liverpool. Their only path to European football next season is through league position, making a top-four finish essential for Champions League participation.

Rosenior, who was appointed head coach in January 2026 following the departure of Mauricio Pochettino, has overseen a mixed run of form since taking charge. Chelsea have won 10, drawn 8, and lost 5 of their 23 league matches under his leadership, including notable victories over Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur but inconsistent performances against lower-half teams.

The uncertainty Rosenior expressed about the consequences of missing Champions League qualification contrasts with the clear financial and sporting implications typically associated with such an outcome. Clubs that fail to qualify for the Champions League lose access to significant revenue streams, including guaranteed group-stage payments (minimum €18.6 million in 2025-26), market pool shares, and higher commercial valuation. Player retention and recruitment can be affected, as Champions League football is often a key factor in attracting and maintaining elite talent.

When asked whether the club’s ownership or sporting director had outlined specific contingency plans for a Europa League scenario, Rosenior deflected, stating that those discussions occur at a higher level.

“Those conversations happen between the sporting director, the owners, and the executive team,” he said. “My job is to prepare the team, pick the lineup, and try to win games. If we don’t get into the Champions League, we’ll deal with whatever comes next — but right now, I’m not focusing on that.”

Chelsea’s final match against Newcastle United will kick off at 16:00 BST on Sunday, May 25, 2026, at St. James’ Park. The game will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Main Event and streamed via Now TV. A win for Chelsea, combined with an Aston Villa loss or draw against Liverpool at Villa Park, would see the Blues finish fourth and secure Champions League football for the 2026-27 season.

If Chelsea fail to qualify for the Champions League, they will enter the 2026-27 UEFA Europa League at the group stage, assuming they do not win either domestic cup — a scenario already ruled out. Their Europa League campaign would begin in September 2026, with the group stage draw scheduled for August 30, 2026, in Istanbul.

Rosenior’s candid admission underscores the pressure facing the Chelsea head coach as he attempts to deliver a top-four finish in his first full season in charge. While he remains focused on the immediate task of winning the final match, the broader implications of falling short continue to loom over the club’s planning for next season.
