Participants in the “Libau Bike Veloaktīvs 2026” cycling challenge completed 5,322 rides over a period of less than six months, covering a total distance of 69 814,3 kilometers and spending more than 11 693 hours on the road, according to Inga Krivcova, board chairwoman of the Liepāja cycling activists and winter swimmers club “VeloRonis.”
The cycling initiative began on April 19 with an opening ride that drew more than 300 participants. Following the launch, riders continued on an individual basis, completing up to 15 kilometers per day with routes starting or ending within the Liepāja administrative territory. Kilometers were logged daily through the “DistatRace” platform, which allowed participants to monitor both personal statistics and overall event progress. Monthly caps limited the distance eligible for the challenge: full calendar months permitted up to 330 kilometers, April allowed 150 kilometers, and September allowed 210 kilometers.
Challenge Participation and Monthly Highlights
A total of 124 individuals took part in the challenge. August proved to be the most active month, drawing 93 participating riders. Approximately 10% of the participants reached the maximum eligible distance across all months of the challenge, logging a total of 1,680 kilometers. On average, an active participant covered 563 kilometers, spent 94 hours and 18 minutes on the road, and completed individual rides averaging 13.1 kilometers in length.
To maintain momentum throughout the event, organizers held intermediate finishes at the end of each calendar month. Prizes provided by event supporters were drawn among riders who hit the maximum monthly target as well as those who maintained regular activity without reaching the cap. Supporters backing the prize pool included “Libau Bike,” cafés “Papus,” “Čili Pizza,” “KUBS,” and “Velopietura,” along with “Drift Arena,” “Eugesta,” and the Liepāja adventure park “Tarzāns.”
Closing Event and Main Prize Distribution
On September 23, roughly 30 participants and cycling enthusiasts gathered for a final group ride. The route extended from the cyclist bridge on Ganību Street to the “Libau Bike” shop. At the destination, actor Edgar Pujāts announced the winners of the September intermediate prizes and oversaw the draw for the grand prize—a “SCOTT” bicycle provided by “Libau Bike”—which was won by Liene Skābarniece-Reņģe.

Organizing bodies emphasized that the primary objective of the initiative is to normalize daily cycling as an accessible form of physical activity suitable for riders of all ages, physical backgrounds, and experience levels.
