The New York Liberty, off to a franchise-best 6-0 start, welcome the Connecticut Sun on Sunday for their Commissioner’s Cup opener. New York, fresh off an 85-63 victory over Washington, leads the WNBA in both scoring offense and scoring defense. Their success hinges on key players maintaining their winning role.
last season, the liberty reached the Commissioner’s Cup final but fell to the Minnesota Lynx. however, they later avenged that loss by defeating the Lynx in the 2024 WNBA Finals.
Breanna Stewart spearheads the Liberty’s attack, averaging 19.0 points per game, while Jonquel Jones ranks second in the league with 11.4 rebounds per game. Jones recently recorded her 26th double-double as a member of the Liberty; the team is undefeated in those games.

with their recent win,the Sun became only the second WNBA franchise to reach 500 wins, joining the Los Angeles Sparks. Of those, 440 were earned in Connecticut, with the remaining 60 as the Orlando Miracle.
“You see the impact she has. JJ, with the 18 boards tonight… she’s such a key part,” said Liberty coach Sandy Brondello, praising jones’ performance. “I told the players, let’s embrace the opportunity we have… they’ve got a commitment to excellence.”
Mabrey acknowledged the Sun’s struggles, stating, “I think we have a team that doesn’t have a lot of experience… right now, we need to continue to build off of this and figure out what are the things that work for us and do them every night.”
What’s next
The Liberty look to continue their dominant start against a Sun team seeking to find consistency. New York won three of four matchups against Connecticut last season, setting the stage for a competitive Commissioner’s Cup game.
