Amateur astronomer Sarah Miller, who captured a breathtaking image of the fire rainbow over her backyard in Arizona, described it as “a sight to behold.”

“The colors were so intense and the arc stretched across almost half the sky,” Miller said. “It felt like something out of a dream.”

What Causes These Ethereal Arcs?

meteorologist David chen explains that fire rainbows, scientifically known as circumhorizontal arcs, form when sunlight passes through horizontally oriented ice crystals high in the atmosphere.

“These crystals act like prisms, splitting the sunlight into its spectrum of colors,” Chen said.

Though, catching a glimpse of this celestial spectacle is a rare treat.

“They require very specific atmospheric conditions,” Chen explained. “Including the presence of those high-altitude ice crystals and sunlight hitting them at a low angle. This is why they are frequently enough seen in the late morning or early afternoon.”

Tips for Spotting a Fire Rainbow

For those hoping to witness this phenomenon firsthand,Chen offers some advice:

“Keep an eye on the sky, especially on clear days with sunny conditions,” he said. “Look towards the eastern horizon in the late morning or western horizon in the early afternoon. And be patient – these rainbows are fleeting but unforgettable.”

Reports of fire rainbow sightings have poured in from across the country, including California,Texas,Florida, and New York. Social media platforms have been abuzz with photos and videos of the phenomenon, with many users expressing awe and wonder.

While fire rainbows are relatively rare, they serve as a reminder of the beauty and wonder that can be found in the natural world.
