Lidl Ireland has committed €420 million to expand its retail footprint across Munster, setting a €200 million regional distribution centre in County Cork against a wider network of store openings. The German discount retailer announced the regional investment programme at an event at Blackrock Observatory in Cork, confirming that €306 million of the total outlay is earmarked specifically for County Cork.
Building a €200 Million Distribution Centre at Little Island
At the center of the regional expansion is a state-of-the-art regional distribution facility located in Wallingstown, Little Island. This installation marks Lidl’s fourth distribution hub in the Republic of Ireland, joining existing facilities in Mullingar, Newbridge, and North Cork’s Charleville, and stands as the second such centre in County Cork. The Little Island development is anticipated to come on stream by 2030.

Creating 500 Permanent Jobs and Supporting Construction Workers
The investment program will generate more than 500 permanent new jobs across Munster, lifting Lidl’s regional headcount from 1,300 to over 1,800 workers. Of those permanent positions, 250 are allocated directly to Cork. Additionally, the construction phase of the 25 planned developments—which include 14 new store openings and 10 existing location redevelopments—will support more than 4,500 construction workers throughout the province.
Partnering With Local Suppliers Across Munster
Company executives highlighted existing supply chain relationships as a core pillar of the expansion. Lidl procured €136 million worth of produce from 120 Cork-based suppliers last year, partnering with local enterprises such as Keohane Seafoods, Castlecor Potatoes, and Irish Yogurts.
Our contribution here goes well beyond bricks and mortar. We already work with 120 suppliers across Cork, from whom we procured €136m worth of produce last year, and we are enormously proud of the relationships we have built with local businesses, colleagues and community organisations across the region.
Robert Ryan, chief executive officer of Lidl Ireland and Northern Ireland

Executing a Broader National Expansion Strategy
The Munster-focused funding package forms a substantial component of a wider €600 million, five-year investment program across the Republic of Ireland, during which the supermarket giant intends to open up to 35 additional stores nationwide. Taoiseach Micheál Martin welcomed the funding announcement at the Blackrock Observatory event.
This €420m investment in Munster represents a significant commitment to Ireland. Businesses like Lidl play an important role in our economy, creating jobs, supporting local suppliers, and making an important contribution to communities right across the country.
Micheál Martin, Taoiseach
Tara O’Connor, Lidl’s regional managing director, added that the Little Island distribution hub and accompanying store projects build the necessary infrastructure to support multi-year growth for the retailer in Cork and the wider Munster region.
