Lidl Manager Loses Sacking Claim After Saying Warehouse Work ‘Too Physical’ for Women
Lidl Manager Loses Job After Making Sexist Remarks About Female Workers
Charleville, Co. Cork - A Lidl manager has been unsuccessful in his challenge against his dismissal after making disparaging remarks about women working in teh warehouse. Gabor Hoff, a former deputy logistics manager at Lidl Ireland Gmbh’s regional distribution center, was let go in December 2022 following an incident in october of the same year.
The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) heard that Hoff made comments to two female colleagues suggesting that “women should not work in the distribution center” and that he “does not hire women.” This followed an incident where a female colleague injured herself while working in the warehouse.
Lidl management emphasized that Hoff was already on a final written warning for making “suggestive comments” to female staff and had recently completed a training course on workplace dignity.
Janice O’Connell,Lidl’s logistics manager, testified that an agency worker, identified only as “Ms.A,” reported Hoff’s comments, stating that she was ”visibly upset” and had “tears in her eyes.”
Hoff initially claimed he couldn’t remember making the remarks but later stated he “didn’t mean any offense” if he did. He argued that his comments were taken out of context and disputed that Ms. A was upset. He maintained that he believed the picking job was “too physical” for women but denied saying he wouldn’t employ them.
However, the WRC adjudicator, David James Murphy, found Lidl’s decision to dismiss Hoff to be “entirely reasonable.” He noted that Ms. A’s formal complaint indicated she was offended by Hoff’s remarks and that Lidl had made it clear that such comments were unacceptable.
This case highlights the importance of creating respectful and inclusive workplaces, free from gender-based discrimination. Lidl’s swift action in addressing Hoff’s behavior sends a strong message that such conduct will not be tolerated.
