A Nurse Practitioner’s Harrowing Sepsis Experience

Months of pain took a toll on Dave, a 36-year-old husband‍ and father. On May 25, his wife, Sarah White, a nurse practitioner, found him outside cleaning the chicken coop in his boxers, disoriented. His surgical arm had been problematic for‌ weeks, marked by swelling, fevers, and pain. Doctors prescribed oral antibiotics, but White suspected it ⁤wasn’t enough.

By the time they arrived at the ER, dave was in fulminant⁤ septic shock. His blood pressure plummeted to ⁤70/40, and his heart rate‌ soared to 150. His eyes were bloodshot, ‍and⁣ he didn’t recognize his wife or speak. White, drawing on her clinical experience in sepsis management, remained calm despite the chaos.

White⁢ and Dave met as nurses and quickly fell in love.⁤ Their hospital romance⁤ evolved into marriage, three children, ⁤and a‍ home in Connecticut. Now, she faced the possibility⁣ of telling their‍ children that their father might ⁤not come home.

At midnight,Dave was taken to surgery for source control of his elbow. White sought advice⁤ from a fellow RN, who suggested she ‌go home and rest. The orthopedic surgeon called at 2 ‍a.m. to report that Dave had survived the surgery, his tenth since August. However, the surgeon was puzzled, stating the elbow looked “perfect” and he didn’t know why Dave was so sick.

This marked the beginning of white’s eroding trust in the healthcare system. She ⁣knew the elbow was the source of the infection. She⁤ recognized how easily routine can overshadow critical thinking, causing‍ crucial⁢ details to ‌be overlooked. The real story, she realized, frequently enough lies in the subtle⁤ nuances of a patient’s narrative.

The next morning, White found Dave in the ICU, ⁢intubated, sedated, and restrained.⁤ He was on multiple IV medications. despite the shock, she recalled conversations with Dave about their wishes should the other end up in such a state.Seeing him so ⁢vulnerable only deepened her love.

White balanced her time between the hospital and⁤ caring for their sons, striving to maintain their routine. Slowly, Dave began to wake up, still battling the infection and the effects of ten rounds of⁣ anesthesia.

Eventually,Dave came home with a PICC ⁢line and eight weeks of IV antibiotics. Despite his condition, he insisted on taking the boys fishing, returning late, exhausted but triumphant, with beaming children and their catch.

White acknowledges that life has changed. The sequelae⁤ of such a severe injury are complex, involving appointments, home nurses, insurance battles, new medications, and mental health challenges. ⁢The invisible changes, the shifting family roles, are ⁢the hardest to navigate. Through ‍this, she began to envision ⁤a new path, using her experience to help other families facing similar‌ challenges with sepsis.

White hopes healthcare providers ⁤will remember to listen to families and trust those who know the patient best. Behind every hospital door, she says, is a family holding its breath, waiting,⁤ hoping, and fighting for their loved one.

now based in Virginia, Sarah White is a nurse practitioner, small business owner, and premedical student ⁣preparing to apply to medical school in 2026.‌ She ‍is also the ⁤founder of Wrinkle Relaxer and Bardot Boutique Aesthetics.
