Extended Years of Good Health
Individuals in France can anticipate enjoying a meaningful period of healthy years in retirement. Women reaching age 64 can expect to live an additional 13 years without experiencing limitations in their daily activities. This figure notably exceeds the European Union average of 2 years and 6 months, positioning France as the fifth-highest contry within the EU-27 for healthy lifespan.
Men aged 64 can look forward to 10.5 years of life without incapacity, also surpassing the European average by 1 year and 4 months, securing France’s position as the seventh-ranked EU-27 nation in this metric.
Long-Term Gains in Healthy Lifespan
Over the past fifteen years, the proportion of remaining years lived without incapacity has steadily increased across the population. For women, this has risen from 44.7% in 2008 to 50.8% currently. Similarly, men have seen an increase from 47.7% to 52.9% over the same period.
Pandemic Impact and Recovery
The COVID-19 pandemic introduced volatility to these positive trends. Life expectancy without incapacity at age 65 remained stable in 2020, but experienced a substantial increase in 2021. However, this gain was reversed in 2022, with levels returning to approximately those observed prior to the pandemic.
These findings highlight the complex interplay between public health events and long-term health outcomes, emphasizing the importance of proactive health strategies and resilient healthcare systems.
