To address potential confounding factors and establish causality, the researchers employed Mendelian randomization, a technique using genetic variants associated with alcohol consumption as proxies. This method helps to minimize bias and strengthen the evidence for a⁢ causal relationship. The mendelian randomization analysis supported ⁢the observational findings, indicating⁢ a positive association between alcohol consumption and dementia risk.

The study also found that the risk of dementia increased proportionally with⁣ the amount of alcohol consumed. There was no evidence of a threshold⁢ below which alcohol consumption was safe for brain health.
