A video circulating on social media shows passengers at La Noria station of the Mexico City Light Rail fleeing the platform after sparks and black smoke were observed from a train convoy during heavy rainfall on Thursday afternoon.
The incident occurred at 6:15 p.m. When a rupture in the overhead contact wire at La Noria station, en route to Xochimilco, came into contact with the train’s roof, causing overheating and smoke emission, according to the city’s Electric Transport Service.
Footage shared online captures passengers shouting “¡Córranle, córranle!” as they evacuated the platforms, with visible sparks emanating from the top of the train unit. Photographs from the scene show damage to part of a railcar, which was attended to by Mexico City Security Secretariat personnel and firefighters.
No injuries were reported following the event. Authorities implemented a temporary shuttle service between Tasqueña and Tepepan to facilitate the removal of the affected train and inspection of the contact wire.
Service remains suspended at La Noria, Huichapan, Francisco Goitia, and Xochimilco stations while maintenance crews continue work at the site. The Electric Transport Service confirmed that normal operations will resume once safety inspections are completed.
