A California judge has granted rapper Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill, entry into a mental health diversion program following his arrest for attacking police officers in Los Angeles. The agreement allows the artist to avoid prison time provided he adheres to specific legal and medical requirements over the next two years.

During a hearing on Monday, April 7, 2026, Judge Alan Schneider informed Hill that the felony charges against him may be quashed if he successfully completes the treatment program and obeys all laws. This program, formally known as postponement of prosecution probation, is designed as an alternative for individuals with mental illness who have become entangled in the criminal justice system.

Details of the Incident and Charges

The legal proceedings stem from an incident in August 2025, when authorities allege that the 26-year-old was walking through the streets of Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley wearing only white briefs and white boots. Police responded to calls regarding his behavior on Ventura Boulevard, where he reportedly charged at officers.

Details of the Incident and Charges

According to a criminal complaint, three officers were injured during the confrontation. Hill was subsequently arrested on charges of attacking a police officer and resisting arrest. Due to concerns regarding a possible overdose, he was also transported to a hospital following the arrest.

Hill faced four felony counts in total, including three counts of battery with injury on a police officer. Because of the nature of these felony charges, he faced a potential sentence of up to five years in prison if found guilty and if he failed to complete the court-ordered treatment.

Medical Diagnosis and Court Findings

The court found that the incident was the result of bipolar disorder, a diagnosis Hill received following the August arrest. His defense attorney, Christy O’Connor, stated that Judge Schneider viewed the rapper’s behavior during the arrest as aberrant from his normal conduct.

The judge further noted that Hill appears to be doing very well and observed that society is better off when the artist is receiving proper treatment. Following the incident, Hill spent two months in a treatment facility located in Arizona.

While Hill had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges, the current diversion agreement prioritizes medical stabilization over incarceration.

Terms of the Diversion Program

To secure the eventual dismissal of his criminal case, Hill must satisfy several conditions over a two-year period. These requirements include:

  • Strict adherence to his mental health treatment program for bipolar disorder.
  • Full compliance with all laws for the next two years.
  • A prohibition on the possession of firearms.
  • A requirement that he does not threaten violence.

Failure to comply with these terms could result in the reinstatement of the felony charges and the potential for prison sentencing.

Following the hearing, Hill expressed his relief to the media. Speaking with Rolling Stone, he stated, I’m thankful. Just very thankful. It could have been much worse.

The development follows a period of public uncertainty after the arrest. A few days after the initial incident, Hill posted a video to Instagram informing fans that the preceding four days had been terrifying, though he assured his followers he would be fine.

The district attorney’s office did not provide a comment regarding the diversion agreement.
