Lily of the Valley: An Indie Album Embracing Hope Amidst Grief
When lily of the valley blooms, it marks winter’s end. In Victorian floriography, this flower symbolizes happiness. As the land warms, its sweet scent heralds better times ahead.
Will Kennedy created his album, Lily of the Valley, under the name 22° Halo. He wrote it while facing the reality of his wife Kate’s brain cancer diagnosis. This album expresses their shared grief and anxiety during difficult times. Kennedy described the creative process as a source of hope amid uncertainty.
In “Cobwebs”, a highlight of the album, Kennedy conveys his emotions during Kate’s diagnosis. He recalls moments of tension, such as waiting for test results and supporting Kate through surgery. His lyrics contain vivid details similar to those of artists like Phil Elverum and Emily Sprague. Despite the heavy themes, he maintains a hopeful tone. The song’s chorus features a blend of percussion and feedback, as he and Kate sing about believing in a positive outcome.
Optimism characterizes Lily of the Valley. In the song “Ivy”, Kennedy acknowledges the gravity of their situation, expressing concern for Kate. Yet, he also finds beauty in simple moments. “CVS on a Walk” features gentle guitar sounds, reflecting their struggles and peace. Kennedy reassures listeners that “the hair will grow back” as they find comfort in everyday activities, illustrating resilience amid challenges.
