Cork seized the Munster hurling crown, defeating Limerick in a historic penalty shootout at TUS Gaelic Grounds. The dramatic victory ended Limerick’s quest for a seventh consecutive title.
Darragh Fitzgibbon’s late ’65 forced extra time, ultimately leading to the first-ever penalty shootout in a Munster Senior Hurling Championship final. Despite an initial save by Nickie Quaid, misses from Barry Murphy, Tom Morrissey, and Declan Hannon sealed Limerick’s fate, handing Cork the Munster hurling championship.
Limerick manager John Kiely defended the players who missed penalties, emphasizing that the defeat was a team loss. This marks Kiely’s first final defeat after 16 consecutive final wins across seven years, encompassing six Munster titles, five All-Irelands, three national Leagues, and three Munster Leagues.
“You are taking a shot on behalf of the group, it is not on the lads,” Kiely said. “I thought Declan, Tom, and Barry, manfully, put their hand up to take these penalties. As far as we are concerned, it was limerick senior hurling team that lost this afternoon. It wasn’t anything to do with Barry, Tom, or Declan for sure.”
Kiely acknowledged the unusual circumstances of deciding a Munster final by penalties, stating a preference for games to conclude in normal play. However, he accepted the rules and commended Cork’s performance under pressure.

kiely also noted the increased injury time in the second half of extra time, notably after referee Thomas Walsh was replaced due to cramp by James Owens. Despite this, he praised Walsh’s overall performance and acknowledged the end of Limerick’s munster championship journey.
Reflecting on the game, Kiely pointed to a decrease in Limerick’s scoring efficiency compared to their previous match against Cork. He maintained pride in his team’s efforts throughout their extraordinary run in the province, highlighting their strong record in extra time.
“All told, I have just to be super proud of our fellas for the effort they put in. It was just an amazing effort,” Kiely said.”We have six out of seven Munster finals, that record will stand a long time.”
What’s next
limerick will now regroup and focus on the All-Ireland series, aiming to bounce back from this munster final defeat and continue their pursuit of national success.
