A Life of Service: From Zambia to Southill
Fr. Joe Hayes,aged 80 and residing at Revington Park,North Circular Road,Limerick city,celebrated his 50th anniversary as a priest at Holy family Parish Church in Southill,where he has ministered for the past decade.His journey has been marked by diverse experiences, including witnessing the AIDS epidemic in zambia and the country’s transition to independence from the United Kingdom.
He fondly recalls seeing former students achieve prominent positions within the Zambian government following independence. Fr. Hayes’s ministry has consistently placed him at the intersection of significant social and political change.
Golden Jubilee Party and Gratitude
A special Mass was held to honor Fr. hayes’s dedication. Attendees included representatives from various local organizations, including a branch of the Knights of St. Columbanus, Fr. Walsh,Fr.Jim Maher SJ, fr. Pat Hogan, members of the Moyross community, and sisters from the Good Shepherd and Mercy orders residing in the parish.
Fr. Hayes expressed his gratitude to all those who organized and attended the celebration in Southill. He affirmed his commitment to continuing his ministry, stating, “I’ll still continue there as long as I’m useful.”
