Limoux, France – Judo Club Limouxin (JC Limoux) celebrated a significant milestone this week with the awarding of a black belt to Maxence Mérou, a testament to years of dedication and perseverance. The presentation, held at the club, saw coaches Hervé Puy and Océane Doucey officially bestow the honor upon the 17-year-old athlete.

Mérou’s journey to black belt status began in Carcassonne before he joined JC Limoux, where he quickly found a welcoming environment that fostered his growth. According to club information, he was drawn to the “friendly atmosphere and the encouragement of his comrades.” His commitment to training was described as “exemplary,” and his progress was particularly notable in techniques like Sode-Tsurikomi-Goshi and Hane-goshi – swimming hip throws that form a core part of his repertoire.

Balancing academic pursuits with rigorous judo training, Mérou maintained a schedule of two training sessions per week. His preparation culminated in the successful validation of his katas (forms) in May 2025, followed by the technical UV assessment on November 8th of the same year. A subsequent participation in shiai (competition) allowed him to secure the final points needed to achieve the coveted black belt.

The Judo Club Limouxin, located in the Aude region of France, has established itself as a vibrant hub for judo enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels. Recent reports indicate a consistent membership of around 180 students, ranging from young children participating in “baby judo” programs – starting at age four – to seasoned veterans. This demonstrates a broad appeal and a commitment to fostering a lifelong passion for the sport.

The club’s success extends beyond individual achievements. A report from June 11, 2024, highlighted a gala event held at the Olympie, showcasing the skills of all its members. Over 220 judokas participated, demonstrating the club’s vitality and dynamism. The event featured demonstrations from the youngest beginners to the most experienced practitioners, illustrating the comprehensive nature of the club’s training programs.

JC Limoux offers a diverse range of programs, including baby judo, recreational judo, competitive judo, and jujitsu self-defense. The club also organizes competitions and training camps throughout the year, providing opportunities for continuous improvement and skill development. The club’s dedication to nurturing talent has been recognized through the successes of its athletes in regional and national competitions.

The awarding of a black belt is a significant accomplishment in judo, representing not only technical proficiency but also a deep understanding of the sport’s principles of respect, discipline, and perseverance. For Mérou, it marks the culmination of years of hard work and dedication, and a stepping stone to further growth within the sport. The club itself boasts a history of recognizing achievement, having honored 84 black belt recipients in a previous ceremony.

Looking ahead, Judo Club Limouxin will be taking a break for the summer holidays, with training resuming on September 6th. The club’s continued success is a testament to the dedication of its coaches, the enthusiasm of its members, and its commitment to providing a supportive and challenging environment for judo practitioners of all ages and abilities. The club’s ability to maintain a strong membership and consistently produce successful athletes underscores its importance within the local sporting community.

The club’s coaches, Hervé Puy and Océane Doucey, play a crucial role in the development of its athletes. Their guidance and expertise have been instrumental in the success of numerous judokas, including Maxence Mérou. The club’s emphasis on both technical skill and personal growth creates a well-rounded training experience for its members.

The Judo Club Limouxin’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in its programs for all ages and skill levels. From introducing young children to the fundamentals of judo to providing advanced training for competitive athletes, the club caters to a diverse range of needs and interests. This broad appeal has contributed to its sustained growth and success.
