Taiwan’s Participation at APEC 2024
The 2024 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Annual Meeting took place in Lima, Peru, on November 16. Lin Hsin-yi represented Taiwan at this important event. This marks his return to the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting after a 19-year absence.
During the event, Lin held discussions with significant leaders, including U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. These conversations aimed to strengthen Taiwan’s international relations, particularly in sectors like semiconductors and artificial intelligence.
Lin emphasized several key global issues during the summit. Leaders discussed geopolitics, energy, inflation, food security, and climate change. They expressed concern about how to address these challenges and narrow the economic gap affecting various populations.
Lin noted the shift in supply chains toward more localized and diversified models. He highlighted the importance of empowering disadvantaged groups, including women and tribal communities, by transitioning informal economies to formal ones.
Lin’s preparation for the summit included extensive reading and research. He recognized Taiwan’s critical role in global supply chains, especially in high technology and semiconductors, stating that perceptions of Taiwan have changed positively over the past two decades.
Despite the successes, Taiwan faced challenges during the meeting. Advertisements for Taiwan were removed at the Lima airport due to pressure, reflecting ongoing diplomatic difficulties. Lin stressed the importance of showcasing Taiwan’s strengths and digital advantages to counter these pressures.
Amid a busy schedule, Lin made time to engage with Taiwanese youth, encouraging them to ask questions and seek information. His efforts at APEC aimed to gain international support for Taiwan, highlighting its critical role in the global economy.
