Taiwan’s Lin Yuting Faces Eligibility Questions at World Boxing Federation Tournament

Lin Yuting, Taiwan’s women’s boxing champion and gold medalist from the Paris Olympics, is in the spotlight regarding her eligibility to compete in the World Boxing Federation’s year-end tournament in the UK. The tournament runs from November 27 to 30.

Concerns about Lin’s participation arose after Taiwan’s sports administration announced the team’s withdrawal. The reasons cited were issues with medical data privacy at the event. They hope the World Boxing Federation can create a safe and effective system for such matters.

A spokesperson from the World Boxing Federation clarified that national boxing associations select athletes, and noted Lin had not registered for the competition. The statement referenced concerns brought forward by the Taiwan Sports Administration through media outlets.

The World Boxing Federation emphasizes athlete safety and recognizes that gender transparency is a complicated issue affecting welfare. The Medical Committee of the World Boxing Federation is working on policies to support athlete health and integrity in sports.

The World Boxing Federation was formed in response to issues within the International Boxing Association, which lost recognition from the International Olympic Committee due to financial and administrative problems. The new federation aims to secure boxing’s place in future Olympic Games, including the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Taiwan’s Sports Director Zheng Shizhong acknowledged Lin’s successful Olympic performance but pointed out the lack of established rights protections for athletes in the new organization. The World Boxing Federation’s Medical Committee currently lacks comprehensive procedures to safeguard athletes’ medical information.

Despite agreeing to undergo a medical examination in the UK, Lin Yuting’s team decided to withdraw from the competition to avoid potential injuries. The sports administration respects their decision.
