Lin Yuting Withdraws from World Boxing Federation Tournament

Taipei, November 27, 2024—Lin Yuting, the gold medalist from the Paris Olympics, recently withdrew from the World Boxing Federation’s year-end tournament in the UK. Her team made this decision after concerns about medical confidentiality arose.

Lin had a successful Olympic debut, finishing in the top 16 in the women’s 57kg category and winning gold despite gender controversies. The current tournament is Lin’s first event after the Olympics. Sports director Zheng Shizhong stated that the Taiwan sports administration anticipated potential issues and sent deputy director Fang Ruiwen to accompany the boxing team.

During the Olympics, Lin received support from international organizations, which helped her compete successfully. Currently, however, the newly established World Boxing Federation lacks clear policies to protect athletes’ rights, including complete medical information and confidentiality procedures.

Lin Yuting agreed to undergo a full medical examination but ultimately chose to withdraw to avoid any chance of further injury. Her coaches supported this decision. The Taiwan sports administration respects their choice and has requested communication between the Boxing Association and the World Boxing Federation to ensure better policies in the future.

Zheng Shizhong expressed the need to develop effective internal controls to safeguard the rights of athletes. He highlighted that issues affecting Lin’s participation could also impact Taiwan’s future involvement in events like the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
