The William Hill Lincoln, a traditional barometer of the Flat racing season, is fast approaching, and trainers are keenly observing a potentially revealing detail: horses switching stables. According to Chris Cook, writing in The Front Runner, a Racing Post+ newsletter, a disproportionate number of contenders for this year’s race have recently changed yards, a pattern he’s observed in previous Lincoln victors.

Cook notes that three of the last twelve Lincoln winners had joined new stables shortly before their triumph, suggesting a potential advantage for horses experiencing a change of scenery. He cites Johan (2022), Bravery (2019), and Levitate (2013) as examples, all of whom scored on their first start for a new trainer. While acknowledging the anecdotal nature of this observation, Cook suggests it’s a detail worth considering when assessing the field.

The theory behind this potential advantage is multifaceted. It’s been suggested that a new environment can reinvigorate a horse’s interest and work ethic, or that a different training regime might better suit its individual needs. However, Cook also acknowledges the conflicting idea that horses thrive on routine, leaving the precise reason for any improvement open to speculation.

This year’s Lincoln field presents several such cases. As of the latest reporting, four potential runners had recently switched stables, a higher number than Cook typically expects. While one, Nizam, has been ruled out for the race by trainer Ian Williams, others remain in contention. Botanical, previously trained by George Boughey, is now with Karl Burke, and Burke believes the horse is in good form, though he’d prefer a slightly softer ground. Godwinson, another former Boughey trainee, has also moved to Mick Channon’s yard, and Grey’s Monument has joined Rebecca Menzies’ stable after being sold out of Ralph Beckett’s.

Burke highlights Botanical’s suitability for the race, noting his strong work ethic and the potential for improvement with a change of scenery. He also acknowledges the importance of ground conditions, expressing a preference for a track with some give. He views Botanical as having “a bit of an each-way chance,” and is hoping for a successful start to the Flat season.

The observation about horses switching stables adds an intriguing layer to the Lincoln analysis. While not a foolproof indicator of success, it’s a detail that experienced observers like Cook believe is worth noting. As the Flat season gets underway, and the Lincoln draws closer, this pattern could prove to be a valuable clue for punters and racing enthusiasts alike.
