Lindblad: Ready for F1 with Racing Bulls & Impressing Permane

February 25, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

Bahrain – Arvid Lindblad is preparing for the biggest step of his young racing career, stepping into Formula 1 with Racing Bulls for the 2026 season. The 18-year-old Briton, the sole rookie on the grid, is already immersed in preparations, utilizing extensive simulator work and pre-season testing to bridge the gap between Formula 2 and the pinnacle of motorsport.

Lindblad acknowledges the magnitude of the transition. “Yeah, I think so,” he said when asked if he feels ready for F1, speaking at Racing Bulls’ base in Bahrain. “Obviously, it’s a big step from F2, especially this year. There’s regulation changes and everything is very different. But I’ve been working really hard with the team on the sim at the factory, obviously also trying to utilise these three tests that we have.”

The expanded testing schedule – three pre-season tests this year compared to a typical single test – is a significant advantage for the newcomer. “That’s a big benefit for me this year,” Lindblad explained. “Normally, there’s only one, whereas this year there’s three. So that really helps me to get up to speed. I’m really trying to utilise these tests, and I’m looking forward to getting on track in Melbourne.”

Lindblad’s rapid ascent through the junior formulas – spending only one year in F4, Italian F4, F3, and F2 before reaching F1 – has been remarkable. He became the youngest-ever race winner in both F3 and F2, demonstrating an ability to quickly adapt to new machinery and extract maximum performance. This adaptability is precisely what Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane is looking for.

Permane, a seasoned Formula 1 veteran who has worked with champions like Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso, has been impressed with Lindblad’s early performance. “He’s done a fantastic job,” Permane said. “People often ask me, ‘What do you look for? What do you need in a young driver?’ And of course, the first thing you need is for them to be quick. We’re very comfortable with that, we know he’s got the speed.”

However, speed is only part of the equation. Permane emphasized the importance of a driver’s inquisitive nature and willingness to learn. “But also on top of that, he’s bringing lots of inquisitiveness, he’s asking many questions, his debriefs are great, he’s doing everything we ask of him at the moment.” This eagerness to understand the intricacies of Formula 1 is crucial for a successful transition.

Formula 1 is notoriously unforgiving, and the Red Bull driver program is particularly demanding. Drivers are expected to deliver results, and opportunities are rarely given twice. Despite the high stakes, Lindblad appears unfazed by the pressure.

“I wouldn’t really say pressure,” Lindblad stated. “If I’m being honest, This represents what I’ve worked towards my whole life. So I’m excited to be here, and all I’m really thinking about at the moment is trying to work with the team, trying to understand the cars to get the best performance I can, trying to extract the most out of the package from the beginning.”

Lindblad’s focus on collaboration and understanding the car suggests a mature approach for a rookie. He’s not fixated on immediate results but rather on building a strong foundation with the team. This strategy is likely informed by the knowledge that the 2026 season features significant regulation changes, adding another layer of complexity for all drivers, especially newcomers.

Racing alongside Liam Lawson, an established driver within the Red Bull system, will also provide Lindblad with a valuable benchmark and learning opportunity. Lawson’s experience will be invaluable as Lindblad navigates the challenges of his first F1 season.

The combination of Lindblad’s natural talent, rapid learning curve, and the support of a seasoned team principal like Permane positions him as a driver to watch in 2026. While the pressure of performing for Red Bull is undeniable, Lindblad seems determined to embrace the challenge and focus on maximizing his potential.

The Melbourne Grand Prix, the opening race of the 2026 season, will be the first true test of Lindblad’s readiness for Formula 1. It will be a crucial opportunity for him to demonstrate his capabilities on the world stage and begin his journey as a Grand Prix driver.
