CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, Italy — American alpine skiing superstar Lindsey Vonn’s Olympic comeback ended abruptly Sunday, February 8, 2026, with a crash just 13 seconds into the women’s downhill race at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics. The 41-year-old was airlifted off the mountain after the fall, dashing her hopes of adding to her Olympic medal collection.
Vonn had successfully completed two training runs leading up to the race, but lost control coming off the first jump of the course. According to reports, her right arm caught a gate, sending her off balance and into a tumble down the slope. The crash occurred as she passed through the fourth gate of the race.
A mountain rescue helicopter was dispatched to the scene, and Vonn was taken off the mountain for medical evaluation. The grandstand fell silent as a medical team attended to her for more than 10 minutes, according to witnesses.
The crash marks a devastating end to Vonn’s attempt to return to the pinnacle of the sport after retiring in 2019. She had been enjoying a successful comeback season, winning two World Cup races and demonstrating competitive form. However, her momentum was severely hampered by a torn ACL sustained in a crash at Crans Montana, Switzerland, just nine days prior to the Olympic race.
Despite the recent injury, Vonn remained determined to compete, stating she still had a chance at a medal. She even publicly disputed a sports doctor’s assessment of the severity of her ACL tear, asserting it was still functional.
The Cortina d’Ampezzo course holds a special significance for Vonn, having been the site of several key moments in her career, including her first World Cup podium finish and a victory that once made her the winningest female skier in World Cup history – a record now held by Mikaela Shiffrin.
Vonn’s comeback story resonated with fans, as she overcame a partial knee replacement in 2024, which involved a titanium implant, to return to elite competition. Her performance this season had been remarkable, leading the FIS leaderboard before the injury in Switzerland.
While Vonn’s Olympic dream has been cut short, Team USA still has medal contenders in Breezy Johnson, Jackie Wiles, and Bella Wright. Johnson, in particular, is making a return to the Olympics after a knee injury of her own prevented her from competing in the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.
The women’s downhill race was delayed in recent days due to challenging weather conditions, including fog and light snow. The Olimpia delle Tofane ski course, a classic on the World Cup circuit, proved treacherous for Vonn on Sunday.
