Bettina Ganghofer, managing director of Salzburg Airport, has criticized the Austrian government’s continued subsidy of the Linz-Frankfurt flight route, arguing that it distorts market competition and negatively impacts her business.

Speaking to regional media ahead of planned terminal modernizations at Salzburg Airport, Ganghofer stated that public funding for the Linz-Frankfurt route creates an uneven playing field, particularly as Salzburg Airport seeks to expand its own connectivity and infrastructure without similar state support.

The Linz-Frankfurt route, operated under a public service obligation (PSO) scheme, has received ongoing subsidies to maintain air connectivity between Linz and Germany’s major financial hub. Ganghofer contends that such interventions undermine fair competition, especially when neighboring airports like Salzburg are expected to operate commercially without comparable assistance.

She emphasized that the subsidy not only affects market dynamics but also hampers Salzburg Airport’s ability to attract airlines and investment, as carriers may favor subsidized routes over unsubsidized ones, even when demand or operational viability might otherwise favor alternatives.

Salzburg Airport is currently undergoing a modernization program aimed at upgrading its terminals to improve passenger experience, increase capacity, and meet evolving aviation standards. Ganghofer noted that these efforts are being undertaken without direct state subsidies for core routes, placing additional financial pressure on the airport’s operations.

Her remarks come amid broader debates in Austria about the role of public funding in regional aviation, particularly as governments balance connectivity goals with market efficiency and fiscal responsibility.

Ganghofer called for a reassessment of existing PSO arrangements, advocating for greater transparency and periodic review to ensure that subsidies serve genuine public interest without disadvantaging other airports operating under market conditions.

As of now, the Austrian Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology has not publicly responded to Ganghofer’s comments. The Linz-Frankfurt PSO route remains active under current funding agreements.
