Concussion Controversy Adjustments AFL Star Defender Out
An unfortunate injury to star AFL player Brandon Starcevich has fired up the debate over player conduct in marking contests, ahead of a pivotal decision that may impact the start of the 2026 season. Starcevich, a premier defender from the Brisbane Lions, will sit out due to concussion-related protocols after being injured during a pre-season match against the Adelaide Crows.
During the second term of their game at Brighton Homes Arena this past Thursday, Starcevich was involved in a collision that required him to be assisted off the field. Analyzing the incident with sportsmanship and medical safety in mind, it is clear that this injury spotlights the risks and ethical implications at play.
Given the AFL’s strict concussion protocols and the Lions’ upcoming match against Geelong next Thursday night, Starcevich will miss the team’s season opener. “It was an unfortunate incident — he obviously got pushed into contact — not much you can do about it,” assistant coach Stuart Dew had to say of Starcevich’s injury added: “‘I’m sure it will be looked at…there’s no malice in it, they are just trying to contest the ball. Sometimes players are going to get it wrong.”
The pre-season clash was highly competitive. Despite leading most of the game, Brisbane blew a 22-point lead midway through the final quarter and fell 14.13 (97) to 13.16 (94). The Crows’ late comeback, capped by a string of four unanswered goals and the Lions’ missed opportunities in the final minutes, showcased the team’s resilience.
The star player Eric Hipwood returned from injury, scoring two crucial goals. Another notable performance came from Levi Ashcroft, brother of Norm Smith Medallist Will, who is poised for a roster spot in the round one debut with a promising display, including a final-term goal.
The Adelaide Crow’s victory concludes their encouraging pre-season run. The team showcased strong performances from recent acquisitions such as former GWS pair James Peatley and Isaac Cumming, new vice-captain Alex Neal-Bullen, and rookie Sid Draper. With Draper delivering a standout performance in the second half, expectations for his debut are high.
