In a display of sportsmanship and concern for player safety, the Detroit lions and Atlanta Falcons agreed to end their preseason game early on friday night after a serious injury to a Lions player. The game was halted with the Lions leading 17-10.
A mutual Decision Rooted in Respect
Both Lions head coach Dan Campbell and Falcons coach Raheem morris made the call to stop play, prioritizing the well-being of the teams over completing the game. Campbell praised Morris, calling him a “class act” and explaining, “he’s the ultimate class act. We agreed it just didn’t feel right to finish that game.”
Morris echoed the sentiment, describing the decision as “common courtesy.” He emphasized the difficult scene unfolding on the field, stating, “It was tough to watch… It was tough for the other team to see getting a teammate hurt that way. It was the right thing to do for Dan and his crew and his team and everything we had going on right there, I thought that was the right thing.” Morris further added, “You never like to see anybody get hurt in any type of game or any type of way. It was a tough deal for those guys,a tough deal for us,a tough deal all across the board.”
Lions quarterback Jared Goff confirmed the mood on the sideline, saying, “I don’t think anyone on that sideline wanted to play.We weren’t part of that decision but you could look in anyone’s eyes and see that.”
Precedent in Preseason Play
While the decision to halt the game might have seemed unusual, it wasn’t unprecedented. Similar situations occured in the 2023 preseason in consecutive weeks.
In Week 2, a game between the New England Patriots and Green Bay packers was called off after Patriots cornerback Isaiah Bolden was carted off the field following a collision with a teammate while attempting to tackle a receiver. Bolden was hospitalized but thankfully released the following day.
A week later, a game between the Miami Dolphins and Jacksonville Jaguars was similarly stopped when Dolphins receiver Daewood Davis suffered an injury while running a route and being hit by a Jaguars linebacker. Davis was also hospitalized and released a day later.
A Reminder of Player Safety Concerns
These incidents serve as stark reminders of the inherent risks in football and the importance of prioritizing player safety. The events unfolded just eight months after the frightening on-field medical emergency involving Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. In January 2023, Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest during a game against the cincinnati Bengals and required resuscitation on the field.
Hamlin’s remarkable recovery and return to football – ultimately becoming a Bills starter - stands as a testament to advancements in medical care and the resilience of athletes. However, the recent injuries underscore the need for continued vigilance and a commitment to minimizing risks within the sport. the decisions made by Campbell and Morris on Friday night reflect a growing awareness and a shared duty to protect the players.
