Lisbon, Portugal – A pall of grief has descended upon Lisbon following a devastating accident on the Gloria funicular railway Wednesday evening. At least 15 people are confirmed dead, adn approximately 18 others injured after the popular tourist attraction derailed and crashed against a building.
The incident occurred shortly after 6:00 PM local time, sending shockwaves through the Portuguese capital. The iconic Gloria funicular, a tram-like car that ascends and descends a steep hillside connecting Restauradores Square in the downtown area with the vibrant Bairro Alto, suffered a catastrophic failure. Local media reports indicate the haulage cable snapped, leading to the tragic crash.
“It’s a tragic day for our city,” Mayor Carlos Moedas somberly stated. “Lisbon is in mourning. It is a tragic, tragic incident.”
