Health officials are investigating an extensive outbreak of listeriosis, a serious bacterial infection, following the death of an adult. The outbreak has been linked to a wide-ranging recall of over 140 ready meal products sold across the country, prompting urgent action from retailers and food safety authorities.
Nine Cases Confirmed Amidst Widespread Product Recall
Nine cases of listeriosis have been confirmed in connection with the outbreak, which has led to a significant recall of ready meals produced by Dublin-based Ballymaguire Foods. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) issued a recall notice for branded ready-made meals and side dishes due to the potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria responsible for causing listeriosis.
The affected products span a variety of popular dishes, including pasta bakes, curries, turkey and ham dinners, pasta bolognese, and beef stroganoff. These meals were distributed to major retailers such as Tesco, supervalu, Aldi, and Centra, and also othre brands including The Happy Pear, Clean Cut Meals, Fuel’d Foods, and From the Farm.
Ballymaguire Foods Initiates Precautionary Recall
Ballymaguire Foods has initiated a full “precautionary” recall of all products manufactured at one of its facilities after Listeria bacteria were identified during a routine quality control check. In a statement, the company emphasized the rarity of such incidents and assured that they are treating the situation with the utmost seriousness, working closely with all relevant parties to manage it swiftly and responsibly.
Understanding Listeriosis: Symptoms and Vulnerable Groups
Listeriosis is a foodborne illness typically acquired by consuming contaminated food.Symptoms can include flu-like illness or diarrhoea, with the incubation period ranging from three to 70 days, averaging around three weeks. While serious infection is uncommon, it poses a significant risk to individuals with weakened immune systems, older adults, and pregnant women.
In pregnant women, infection may present with mild or no symptoms, but it can lead to severe complications for the unborn infant. The HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) is actively investigating the death of the adult with listeriosis, though further details regarding the deceased patient are being withheld to ensure medical confidentiality.
retailers Act Swiftly to Remove Implicated products
In response to the FSAI recall notice, retailers have been instructed to immediately remove all implicated products from sale. Recall notices are also being displayed prominently at checkouts to inform consumers. The extensive list of affected products includes various own-brand labels from Tesco, SuperValu, and Centra, alongside specific product lines from Tesco (‘Irish Classics’, ‘Classic Kitchen’, ‘Finest’), SuperValu (‘Freshly Prepared’, ‘Signature Taste’), and Aldi (‘Specially Selected’, ‘Inspired Cuisine’).
Consumers are strongly advised to check their refrigerators and discard any of the recalled products. The full list of implicated products is available on the FSAI website. This incident underscores the critical importance of robust food safety protocols and prompt action in safeguarding public health.
