Understanding Listeria and Its Risks
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause listeriosis, an infection that can be particularly hazardous for certain groups. Symptoms can range from mild flu-like or gastrointestinal issues, such as vomiting, nausea, and diarrhoea, to more severe complications in rare cases.
Vulnerable populations, including pregnant women, babies, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, are at a higher risk of developing serious infections. The incubation period for listeria can vary significantly, averaging three weeks but possibly ranging from three to 70 days between initial infection and the onset of symptoms.
For healthy adults, listeriosis often presents with no symptoms or mild flu-like symptoms. Though, in immunocompromised individuals and the elderly, the infection can spread to the central nervous system, leading to meningitis and/or septicaemia. Symptoms of these severe complications can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions.
Pregnant women may experience no symptoms or only mild flu-like illness. Despite this, infection during pregnancy can result in premature labor, meningitis in newborns, or even miscarriage.
public Health Response and Case Numbers
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has instructed retailers to remove implicated products from sale and to display recall notices prominently at points of sale. Wholesalers and distributors have been requested to contact their affected customers to facilitate product recalls and to provide point-of-sale recall notices to their retailer clients.
According to the Health Protection Surveillance Center (HPSC), there have been seven cases of listeriosis notified in Ireland in the first 29 weeks of this year. This follows 22 cases reported last year, an increase from the 18 cases recorded in 2023. Of the 18 cases in 2023, one individual died from the infection.
The HPSC notes that while the annual number of listeriosis cases in Ireland is relatively small, the infection’s high mortality rate makes it a meaningful public health concern.Listeriosis can be treated with antibiotics, but even with treatment, the infection can be severe and potentially fatal, particularly in the elderly.
