What visitors are saying

“Old Fort Johnson was the residence of Sir William Johnson, an Irish pioneer who became an influential British Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Johnson was a very important colonist who did much to build the future United States even though he was working for the British. Built in 1749 the three story Georgian style house is made of limestone and sits near the banks of the Mohawk River. The house is also home to the Montgomery County Historical Society. Tours of the inside of the house are given and they are educational and informative. Much of the furniture and furnishings in the house are or”

“It’s closed in the winter but I wouldn’t make this your destination. There’s not much to it except a single building certainly not a ‘Fort’. Most other old textile cities have really tried to put their history out there and improved their town to bring in visitors but Amsterdam was a huge disappointment, there’s no downtown, no old town with renovated old mansions or textile mill tours. The best thing I saw was a ‘60’s VW Bug on top of a 1896 chimney and I just found out they are going to demo it.”

“Fort Johnson is the three story limestone house originally enclosed in fortifications built by Sir William Johnson in 1749 on the Mohawk River. ‘Old Fort Johnson’ is located at the center of the village of Fort Johnson, on the north side of NY Route 5 overlooking the Mohawk River just west of NY Route 67. Sir William Johnson was only 23 years old when he arrived oversee his Uncle Peter Warren's land holdings south of the present day city of Amsterdam in the colony of New York. William purchased a tract of land north of the Mohawk River in 1739. He moved there, building a log house, sawmill, a”

“If you are in the area this has a lot of historic info. The day I went there was an autumn festival going on. Cider making and bread making demonstrations, tours of the buildings. Very interesting place.”

“Husband and I had a fabulous time with our tour guide and manager Scott. He had a great understanding of not only the house but also the political and financial situation that led to conflicts and wars. We both have backgrounds in history and rehabilitation and it’s tough to dazzle us. Very enjoyable and answered endless questions with care and thoroughness. Kudos to Scott and this group doing so much for this important structure.”

“A must see for French and Indian War history, the tour guide was incredibly well read on Sir William Johnson, the houses history, the French and Indian War, and New York's colonial politics.. There's lots of artifacts from the local area with coolest piece being a 15th Century dugout canoe!”

“We had a wonderful tour with Scott! He knows absolutely everything! The house is a real gem! It's a must see in Amsterdam!”

“This was very interesting. We had a private tour. The guide was very knowledgeable. This was his home that he modified into a fort during the French and Indian War. He was a loyalist and given the title of Baron. Had a great rapport with native americans. Recommend visiting. A donation of $5 per person is recommended.”

“Wonderfully knowledgeable and pleasant guided tour host. I really enjoyed my visit. I was even given recommendations for local places to eat after my visit. The site is well maintained and the building includes 3 floors of rooms to explore.”
