The recent controversy surrounding the Indonesian punk band Sukatani and their controversial song “Bayar Bayar Bayar” (Pay Pay Pay) has sparked a national debate about free speech, artistic expression, and the role of law enforcement.

National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has openly stated that he holds no grudge against the Sukatani Band’s criticism of the police, showing a willingness to engage with the controversy positively. Prabowo’s stance aligns with his previous remarks, which discussed the issue at a media briefing in Jakarta on Friday, February 21, 2025.

The Indonesian Police, channeling the National Police Chief, reiterated their intention to learn from criticism. Despite various opinions about the matter, the police need to keep themselves from getting accused of stifling freedom of creativity and truthful speaking. In response to the band’s comments, and as quoted by our source, the Police chief said, “In response to criticism, we certainly must be open-minded. The important thing is that there is improvement, and if there is something inappropriate, an explanation can be provided.”

“Criticism serves as a catalyst for the organization to continue improving. Notably, the National Police aim to improve by sanctioning officers who break the rules and rewarding those who demonstrate excellence,” Listyo Sigit Prabowo further elaborated. Earlier, two members of Sukatani Band—Muhammad Syifa Al Lufti, known as Alectroguy, and Novi Citra Indriyati, known as Twister Angel—publicly apologized to the National Police for the lyrics of their song. This song relates to the perception of payment offered to law enforcement officers in several contexts. Their act seemed to be misunderstood earlier, as it was taken as bitter, so to say. However, they intend to educate those who employ civilians in such a way and encourage them to maintain law and community.

“In their eloquent defense, Alectroguy clarified, however, the song was originally intended to criticize police officers who violate the rules. He further verified that the song “Bayar Bayar Bayar” has been withdrawn from streaming platforms. The talented duo appealed to their social media followers to delete videos using the song to ensure the public’s sensitivity. Alectroguy said.

Many members of the Public were appalled when the organization reached the conclusion and announced the service transfer. There were accusations that the police had attempted to-over simplify freedom of creation and expression.
