Lithium Jackpot: US Strikes Gold with Billions-Dollar Discovery Set to Revolutionize the Global Market
Massive Lithium Reserves Discovered in the United States
Geologists have made a groundbreaking discovery in Arkansas, United States, uncovering vast reserves of “white gold,” a valuable resource crucial for battery production.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has identified massive lithium reserves hidden deep within the earth in the southern United States. The journal Science Advances reports that high concentrations of lithium have been found in huge limestone deposits across several states, including Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida.
The area explored, known as the Smackover Formation, was once an ancient sea. Lithium has been discovered in underground brine samples, with concentrations reaching 400 mg per liter. Based on the analysis, geologists estimate that between 5 and 19 million tons of lithium could be stored underground in these locations, accounting for 36% to 136% of all current valuable metal reserves in the United States.
Lithium-rich “brines” are often considered a waste product of the oil, gas, and salt industry. However, if extracted and utilized effectively, they could yield significant benefits. Lithium is a vital resource in battery production, particularly with the increasing transition from internal combustion engine cars to electric vehicles.
By 2030, industrial-scale lithium production is expected to meet nine times the projected global demand for the substance in car batteries, according to geologists. The discovery of these massive lithium reserves in the United States could reshape the global market and play a crucial role in meeting the increasing demand for this valuable resource.
