The Lithuanian national basketball team secured a hard-fought victory against Finland, a win that significantly boosts their chances of a favorable seeding in the EuroBasket knockout stage. However, the triumph was bittersweet, overshadowed by a possibly serious injury too star player Rokas Jokubaitis.
Lithuania, coming off dominant wins against Great Britain (94-70) and Montenegro (94-67) and a loss to Germany (88-107), entered the game with high stakes. A win against Finland would put them in a strong position to secure second place in their group, potentially avoiding powerhouse teams like Turkey and Serbia in the round of 16.
The game began with a surprise move from Lithuanian coach Rimas Kurtinaitis, who opted to start Jonas Valančiūnas on the bench and assigned Margiris Normantas to defend Finnish star Lauri Markkanen. Despite the strategic shift, Finland controlled the first half, leading by a narrow margin (21-20).
Lithuania found their rhythm in the second quarter, capitalizing on second-chance opportunities while Finland struggled with their shooting. This allowed the Lithuanians to build a agreeable lead, going into halftime with a 45-36 advantage.
The third quarter saw Lithuania extend their lead to as much as 14 points. However, Finland battled back, narrowing the gap to single digits (57-48) before the start of the final frame.
The fourth quarter brought both elation and concern for the Lithuanian squad. Rokas Jokubaitis, who had been instrumental in the team’s success with 16 points, suffered an injury after a collision. He was forced to leave the game, requiring assistance from team staff to exit the cloakroom due to the apparent leg injury. The severity of the injury remains unknown, but the sight of Jokubaitis being helped off the court was a worrying sign for the team’s future prospects in the tournament.
Despite the loss of their leader, the remaining Lithuanian players showed remarkable resilience. With the Finnish team threatening to erase the lead, key plays from Ignas Sargiūnas, including a crucial block, and a clutch three-pointer from Tadas Sedekerskis sealed the victory for Lithuania.
Key Performances:
Lithuania: Rokas Jokubaitis (16 points), Marekas blaževičius (14 points), Ąžuolas tubelis (12 points), Ignas Sargiūnas (10 points), Jonas Valančiūnas (8 points), Tadas Sedekerskis (7 points).

While the victory is a significant step towards a favorable position in the EuroBasket knockout stage, the Lithuanian team and its fans are now anxiously awaiting news on the condition of Rokas Jokubaitis. His health will undoubtedly play a crucial role in determining Lithuania’s chances of making a deep run
