PABRADĖ TRAINING AREA, Lithuania (AP) – A week-long search and rescue operation for four U.S. soldiers who went missing during training exercises in Lithuania has concluded with the recovery of all four bodies. The soldiers were found inside their M88 recovery vehicle, which had become submerged in a swamp at the pabradė Training Area.
The recovery effort faced significant challenges due to the challenging terrain. On Monday morning, the M88 was extracted from the swamp, revealing the remains of three soldiers. The search continued for the fourth soldier, culminating in the confirmation of the final recovery on Tuesday night.
Lithuanian Armed forces Defense Staff Chief, Lt. Gen. Remigijus Baltrenas, provided details about the extensive operation, which involved hundreds of personnel from the U.S. Army and Air Force, as well as armed forces from Lithuania, Poland, and Estonia. Lithuanian state and civilian authorities also contributed to the search.
“The operation was difficult, due to the challenging region, and without the cooperation between all these organizations and countries,we would not have the result we have now,” Baltrenas stated.
Military officials noted that a range of technologies aided in the recovery, including hydrolocators, drones, specially trained dogs, and geological expertise.
Search tactics Detailed
Baltrenas emphasized the importance of analyzing the operation to improve future preparedness. “Not only the arrangement, but also the final stage - evaluating the operation itself, learning, identifying how we can prepare for this type of activity, and the arrangement of all algorithms, looking at the outlook,” he said.
Divers from both Lithuania and the U.S. initially probed the swamp’s edges before venturing deeper. Surface and underwater hydrolocators were then deployed to locate the missing soldier. A drone was also used to scan the surface, feeding data into a specialized search algorithm.
A Lithuanian Armed forces spokesperson described the relatively rapid recovery of the fourth soldier as partially “a miracle,” but emphasized the dedication and collaboration of all involved parties. “50 percent is a miracle, and I’m very happy, but I think energy, concentration, collaboration and identification of one goal were the key keys of this successful operation,” the spokesperson said.
Investigation Underway
When questioned about the timeline for the crash investigation, military officials clarified that the U.S. is leading the inquiry into the cause of the accident. The U.S. will determine whether or not to share the findings publicly upon completion. Baltrenas declined to speculate on how the vehicle entered the swamp, stating, “I think the investigation will answer it very well. I should not speculate.”
