Lithuanian Parliament Condemns Georgian Election Irregularities, Calls for New Vote
Vilnius, lithuania – In a strong rebuke of recent events in Georgia, teh Lithuanian Parliament has passed a resolution condemning the country’s parliamentary elections as undemocratic and calling for a new vote. The resolution, supported by 109 deputies with one dissenting vote, criticizes the Georgian government for its handling of protests and its crackdown on civil society.
The Lithuanian Seimas declared that the October parliamentary elections in Georgia “did not meet international standards for democratic elections and were neither free nor fair.” Echoing a call from the european Parliament,the resolution urges Georgia to hold new elections.
The Lithuanian Parliament also expressed deep concern over the Georgian government’s use of force against peaceful protesters in Tbilisi and other parts of the country. The resolution “strongly condemns the violence perpetrated by the Georgian government against peaceful protesters, the intimidation and unlawful detention of civil society and media representatives.”
Furthermore,the Seimas called on the European Union and its member states to impose personal sanctions on Georgian officials and political leaders deemed responsible for the violent crackdown on civilians.Highlighting the importance of human rights in the context of visa liberalization, the resolution urges EU institutions to review Georgia’s visa-free status. It also calls on Georgian authorities to repeal the controversial “foreign agents” law, ensure citizens’ right to peaceful assembly, and refrain from using excessive force against them.The resolution was initially scheduled for a vote on Tuesday but was postponed at the request of Gediminas Jeglinskas, chairman of the Parliament’s National Security and Defense Committee. Jeglinskas argued that the text was drafted hastily and required more time for thorough analysis.

Taking a further step, the Seimas called on the European Union and its member states to implement targeted sanctions against Georgian officials and political figures deemed responsible for the violent crackdown on civilians. The resolution also urges EU institutions to review Georgia’s visa-free status in light of human rights concerns, highlighting the importance of respecting essential freedoms within the context of visa liberalization.
