Kochi, Kerala-based Fragrant Nature Film Creations (FNFC) is expanding its reach with its first international acquisition, securing Indian distribution rights to the critically acclaimed French animated feature Little Amélie or the Character of Rain. The deal, finalized with Paris-based Goodfellas Animation, marks a significant step for FNFC as it launches a dedicated acquisitions and distribution arm.

The film, directed by Maïlys Vallade and Liane-Cho Han, is based on Amélie Nothomb’s novel The Character of Rain (originally titled Métaphysique des tubes). Little Amélie premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival and has since garnered widespread recognition, receiving nominations for prestigious awards including the Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, Annie Awards and Critics Choice Awards in the Best Animated Feature category. It also took home the Audience Award at Annecy.

FNFC acquired all Indian rights excluding airline distribution. According to Anne Sajeev, managing director and producer at FNFC, the acquisition is a strategic step as we build a curated international slate alongside our production pipeline. Sajeev emphasized the company’s belief in strong potential for high-quality global animation in the Indian market.

The acquisition was handled by FNFC’s Riya Rajiv, head of film operations, and Sidharth S. Nair, sales and acquisitions coordinator, working alongside Jason Bressand of Goodfellas Animation.

The film’s narrative centers on Amélie, born in a vegetative state in Kobe, Japan, and her journey after an earthquake awakens her. The story explores themes of family, connection, and self-discovery, and has been praised for its emotional depth. A review in Variety noted that ‘Little Amélie’ starts from a place of (mostly endearing) solipsism and builds empathy and emotional depth as it goes..

FNFC is no stranger to critically recognized cinema. The company is known for producing the Mohanlal and Anupam Kher-starring drama Pranayam (2011) and the crime procedural Golam (2024). Currently, they are in post-production on Half (2026), an action film featuring Ranjith Sajeev, Aiswarya Raj, and Amala Paul.

The Indian premiere of Little Amélie or the Character of Rain is scheduled for February 22, 2026, at AniMela, the Annecy-backed Indian animation festival held at Whistling Woods International in Mumbai. A wider national release will follow. This premiere provides a platform for the film to reach a dedicated audience of animation enthusiasts and industry professionals.

The film’s aesthetic has drawn comparisons to the works of Studio Ghibli, renowned for its iconic representations of Japan and its history. This stylistic resonance is expected to appeal to audiences familiar with and appreciative of Ghibli’s signature visual storytelling.

This acquisition signals a growing trend of Indian production companies actively seeking out international content to broaden their distribution portfolios and cater to evolving audience preferences. FNFC’s move into international acquisitions suggests a commitment to bringing diverse and high-quality animated films to the Indian market. Further acquisition announcements from FNFC are anticipated in the coming months, indicating a sustained effort to expand its international slate.

The success of Little Amélie or the Character of Rain on the international awards circuit, coupled with FNFC’s strategic acquisition, positions the film for a strong reception in India. The combination of critical acclaim, a compelling narrative, and a dedicated distribution partner suggests a promising future for the film’s Indian release.
