Column Urban development education program from a child’s perspective (Malmö City, Sweden)
The city of Malmö in southern Sweden is working to create a good environment for raising children, and the city’s town development process emphasizes not only the perspective of adults but also the perspective of children. The city’s on-campus extracurricular activities include educational programs that encourage children to participate in community development, primarily for children in the third to fifth grades of elementary school. This educational program is called “Min Plats,” and the children conduct on-site surveys with their teachers and extracurricular activity instructors to learn about the places children usually visit and places they avoid. This is a program that summarizes specific solutions as research results.
A feature of this program is that when children report problems or issues to the city of Malmö, the city investigates, responds according to the level of urgency, and proposes more specific solutions. Once approved, it will be made publicly available on the city’s electronic services, just like other proposals. If the proposal receives support from more than 100 people within a certain period of time, the proposal will be circulated to the relevant committees and put on the agenda.
This program is being implemented at multiple schools in the city, and through this program children in the first grade of elementary school at Klagshamn School are actually participating in the town development process and contributing to the creation of a good environment. I am doing it. In addition to reporting to the city that “inappropriate parking by parents picking up and dropping off children creates dangerous traffic conditions,” the city also reported that “inappropriate parking by parents who are picking up and dropping off children creates dangerous traffic conditions,” and based on the results of a survey that found there was a lack of playgrounds for older students. We submitted a proposal to the city regarding the development of a new playground for children. The proposal was later taken up at a meeting of the city’s technical committee, which manages the playground. The committee has expressed its intention to review the existing playground renewal plan and create an opportunity to have a dialogue with local children regarding the renovation of the station park, which is scheduled to take place within the next few years.
The city is currently working to establish community development in which children participate through this program and to promote its use.
