Milisla Gladhniška, Aleksandar Kadiev, and Hristo Pădev have praised the young actor Ivancho as “one of the strongest voices of truth” in Bulgarian cinema, highlighting his authentic performance in the critically acclaimed film The Boy Who Spoke to Wolves, which premiered at the Sofia International Film Festival in March 2026.

The trio of veteran Bulgarian actors spoke during a post-screening panel at the National Palace of Culture in Sofia on April 15, 2026, where they emphasized Ivancho’s ability to convey emotional depth without theatricality, calling his portrayal of a rural boy grappling with loss and moral courage a benchmark for emerging talent in Eastern European cinema.

Gladhniška, known for her roles in Shadows over the Danube and The Last Lecture, stated that Ivancho’s performance “does not act — it reveals,” noting that the 12-year-old actor immersed himself in the role by spending weeks with shepherd families in the Rhodope Mountains to understand their dialect, rhythms, and silent resilience.

Kadiev, a three-time winner of the Askeer Award for Best Actor, added that Ivancho’s restraint in scenes of confrontation — particularly a silent sequence where he witnesses injustice without speaking — demonstrated “a maturity rare in any actor, let alone one so young,” and compared it to the early work of international talents like Jaeden Martell and Roman Griffin Davis.

Pădev, whose directorial debut Echoes in the Valley won the Golden Rose at the 2024 Varna Film Festival, revealed that Ivancho was cast after an open audition that saw over 800 children apply. He said the choice was unanimous because Ivancho “did not perform the part — he lived it, even when the camera was off.”

The Boy Who Spoke to Wolves, directed by Elena Stefanova and produced by Bulgarian Films Collective, follows a boy who, after his father’s disappearance, begins communicating with wolves as a way to process grief and navigate a village torn by superstition and change. The film has been selected for the official competition at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, marking Bulgaria’s first return to the category since 2019.

The film’s soundtrack, composed by Kiril Dimitrov and featuring traditional Bulgarian folk instrumentation blended with ambient soundscapes, has already drawn attention from music supervisors at European streaming platforms. Dimitrov confirmed in an interview with Bulgarian National Radio on April 10 that the score is being considered for submission to the European Film Awards’ Best Original Music category.

Ivancho, whose full name has not been publicly disclosed to protect his privacy, attends a local school in Plovdiv and continues to balance filming with his education. His representatives confirmed to 24 Chasa that he has no immediate plans for further acting projects, choosing instead to focus on his studies and pastoral work with his family during the summer months.

The praise from Gladhniška, Kadiev, and Pădev underscores a growing recognition of Bulgaria’s emerging cinematic talent on the international stage. Industry analysts note that Bulgarian co-productions have increased by 40% since 2022, supported by renewed funding from the National Film Center and creative partnerships with Balkan and European studios.

As The Boy Who Spoke to Wolves prepares for its Cannes debut in May 2026, the film’s team remains focused on its artistic integrity rather than commercial expectations. Stefanova said in a recent interview that the goal was never awards, but “to tell a story that feels true to the children who grow up listening to silence between the words.”
