Betsy Gay, the actress and champion yodeler, died June 13 at the age of 96, according to her friend Bob Satterfield. Gay was known for her role in “Our Gang Comedies,” later known as “The little Rascals,” and her successful yodeling career.
Gay’s acting career began with “Our Gang Comedies,” where she played “Effie,” Alfalfa’s girlfriend, for more than four years. She then transitioned to other film projects in 1938. Her film credits include appearances in over 40 features, such as “Tom Sawyer,” ”Came the Brawn,” and “Mystery Plane.”
Beyond acting, Betsy Gay also excelled as a yodeler. She performed in films like “What’s Buzzin Cousin” and made regular appearances with country artist Stuart Hamblen. Gay won the California State Yodeling Championship in both 1945 and 1946 at the Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles.
While she never had a hit single, Gay guested on radio shows including “The Hank Penny Show” and “The Don Ameche Show.” She toured the East Coast in 1946 and performed with Tex Williams and his band in the 1950s. she also appeared on television shows like “Squeakin’ Deacon’s country Store,” “Hometown Jamboree,” and “Town Hall Party.”
