James Piot Lands Rocket Classic invite After LIV Golf Stint

Former U.S. Amateur champion James Piot⁣ is set to tee off at the Rocket classic in detroit this week, marking his return to ⁣the PGA Tour after a stint with ⁢LIV golf. Piot, who accepted an offer from the upstart league in the spring of 2022, received a sponsor’s invitation to the Rocket Classic, a PGA Tour ⁤event.

Piot’s early PGA Tour experiences ⁢following his U.S. Amateur win were challenging. ‍He missed the cut in all three of‍ his starts at Bay Hill, the Masters, and Harbour Town. However, the guaranteed money‍ and starts offered ‍by LIV ⁢Golf proved to tempting to pass ⁣up.

After an initial season with Sergio Garcia’s fireballs, Piot’s performance dipped in his second year as a member of Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers, leading to his relegation. His last LIV round was Oct. 15, 2023. PGA Tour rules stipulate a one-year waiting⁤ period for former LIV golfers.

Since then, Piot has played ⁢on the Asian Tour and recovered from shoulder surgery in 2024. Earlier this year, he made his Korn Ferry Tour ⁤debut, ⁤missing the cut by a single⁤ stroke.

The rocket Classic marks a significant⁤ chance for Piot, ‍making him the first ex-LIV⁢ player to receive a special invitation to a PGA Tour event. Laurie canter of England previously played in the⁣ Players Championship after qualifying via his world ranking.

Piot had planned to participate in the Rocket’s‍ Monday qualifier before receiving the invitation.

“The fact I finally get to play in the Rocket Classic,it’s a dream come true,” said Piot,a ⁢Michigan native who lead⁤ Detroit Catholic Central⁤ to three state titles before ⁢attending Michigan State.⁣ “Ever as the event was created on the schedule, I wanted to be a part‍ of it.”

Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, and Hideki Matsuyama headline the Rocket Classic field, ⁣which begins Thursday at Detroit Golf⁣ Club.
