On March 10, 2025, Disney unveiled a new trailer for the live-action Snow White film, sparking considerable discussion. The trailer depicts the Queen shattering her magic mirror in a fit of rage, a departure from both the Brothers Grimm fairy tale and the 1937 Disney animated classic.
The Evolution of Snow White: From Page to Screen
The story of Snow White originates from the 1812 German fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm. The narrative centers on Snow White, who, mistreated by her stepmother, seeks refuge in a forest and encounters seven dwarfs. The Queen attempts to eliminate Snow White with a poisoned apple, but a prince revives her, leading to a happy marriage. In the original tale, the Queen dies consumed by jealousy, and the magic mirror remains intact.
In 1937,Walt Disney adapted the tale into Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the first full-length animated feature film. In this version, the Queen’s attempt to poison Snow White leads to her being chased by the seven dwarfs. She falls to her death during the pursuit. Again, the magic mirror is not broken. The prince awakens Snow White with a kiss, and they live happily ever after.
The 2025 Live-Action Snow White: A Bold New Direction
The new live-action Snow White trailer showcases a more assertive Snow White challenging the Queen, culminating in the Queen shattering the magic mirror. This contrasts sharply with previous depictions of Snow White as gentle and delicate. Disney describes the film as “a cinematic spectacle full of magic and music,” highlighting the tension between snow White and the Evil Queen. The trailer features the Queen menacingly asking, “You dare defy me?”
According to reports, this adaptation will see Snow White joining forces with the seven dwarfs to liberate her kingdom from her stepmother. The film will also explore the relationship between Snow white and Jonathan (played by Andrew Burnap), who replaces Prince Florian as her love interest.
Production and Reception
The production cost for Snow White is estimated between $240 million and $270 million. Initial box office projections have been adjusted downward, with estimates now around $50 million for the opening weekend in North America. Negative online reactions have reportedly led Disney to cancel the UK premiere, opting rather for a press conference and limiting media exposure for Rachel Zegler, who plays Snow White, to mitigate negative comments.
